Give the characteristics of genetic code.

Ans. The characteristics of genetic code are as follows :----

It is a triplet codes that is sequence of three bases would code for a particular amino acid and this triplet is referred as codon. There are 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 codons, out of which 61 codons code for amino acids and 3 codons (UAA UAG UGA) which do not code for any amino acid, hence function as stop codons.

* The genetic code is unambiguous and specific because one codon codes for
only one amino acid.

* Some amino acids are coded by more than one codon, hence the code is degenerate.

.* The codons are read in mRNA in a contiguous manner. There are no punctuations.

* The codon AUG has dual functions. It codes for amino acid Methionine (met) and also acts as initiator codon during protein synthesis.

*  The code is nearly universal. For example, codon UUU would code for Phenylalamine (phe) from bacteria to human beings. However, some exceptions to this rule have been recorded in mitochondrial codons and in some protozoans.
