His father, Ramjee Sakpal was in the British Army. He spent his school days in Satara and college days in Mumbai.
He studiedat Elephinstone High School and Elephinstone college. He received a scholarship from the Maharaja of Baroda whom he served later only to quit soon owing to the pinch of untouchability.
He studied in Columbia University at the Gaikwad scholarship. He got his MA degree from the Columbia University and later MSc (Economics) from the University of London.
He got the degree of DSc in Germany. He practised as a pleader, a businessman, a professor and a consultant but failed in all owing to the prevailing untouchability.
He joined the Satyagraha and the Civil Disobedience Movements of Gandhiji. He represented the depressed classes at the Round Table Conference.
He acted in various other capacities but rose to prominence as chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution. He became Law Minister in Nehru's cabinet.
Bhimrao adopted the title Ambedkar after the name of his revered teacher. He was married to Ramabai in 1904 and to Dr. Sharda Kabir in 1948. He died on December 5, 1956.
Towards the end of his life, he embraced Buddhism which does not believe in the Hindu caste system.. Bhimrao suffered a lot on account of untouchability which he fought against all his life.He stressed the need of equal education and respect for men and women.
He believed in equality, secularism and universal brotherhood. He struggled hard to uplift the downtrodden and the deprived classes.
It is a pity that the plous name of Ambedkar is being exploited for narrow personal and political gains.
We find a kind of reverse discrimination to which he was opposed and which he wanted to root out from Indian Society.
Indians are indeed overwhel mingly grateful to him for his excellent contribution to their national life but his soul will rest in peace only when we set up a classless and casteless Indian society of his dream.
