Ans:- DNA fingerprinting is a technique to identify a person on the basis of his/her DNA specificity. Every individual human is unique in having base pair (bp) sequence of his/her entire genomic DNA.
Thus, the ideal way to distinguish an individual from other people, is the determining bp sequences of his/her genomic DNA. A DNA fingerprint is the same for every cell, tissue and organ of
an individual.
Sir Alec jeffreys (1984) invented the DNA fingerprinting technique at Leicester University United Kingdom (UK).
Application of DNA fingerprinting:--
In addition to application in forensic science, it has much wider application such as.
* Paternity disputes are solved by DNA fingerprinting. . It is very useful in the detection of crime and legal pursuits.
* It helps in determining population and genetic diversities.
* It is useful in restoring health of the patient suffering from blood-cancer.
* It can be used to know the breeding patterns of animals facing the danger
of extinction.
