Ans. There are two main methods employed in animal breeding - Natural breeding and artificial breeding.
(a) Natural breeding further may be random or controlled :--
(i) Random breeding:-- In this high quality bulls are kept alongwith some cows and this brings about random breeding.
(ii) Controlled breeding :-- In this
case, mating of native cows with
superior foreign (exotic) bulls takes
place. It includes European breeds e.g.,
Holstein, Brown Swiss, Jersey etc.
(b) Artificial breeding or insemination:-
In this case, the semen of superior
males is collected and injected into the vagina or reproductive tract of selected females by breeder.
The semen can be used immediately
or can be presumed for later use. In
case of natural breeding, a large number of sperms are ejaculated or we can say
that there is a huge wastage of sperms, whereas in artificial insemination a fewer
number of sperms are required to
achieve the conception. So, we can
say the artificial insemination is the
best and economical breeding method.
