Ans. For making virus-free plants the apical or axillary meristems are good
as they are free from virus. Meristem culture is involved in this process.
Actually, it does not involve the regeneration of new shoot meristem.
The explants are generally used in meristem culture are shoot tips and
nodal segments. The explants are
cultured in a medium having cytokinin.
After that the plantlets are obtained and subjected to hardening and transferred
in the field. This culture is carried out in potato, banana, sugarcane, orchids etc.
It is used in
(a) production of virus-free plants - potato, banana and sugarcane.
(b) production of transgenic plants.
(c) germ plasm conservation. and
(d) rapid clonal multiplication.
